You never have to convince me to buy new shoes. While I consider myself to be pretty responsible in most areas of my life, my self-control around strappy sandals, beautiful boots and pointy-toe pumps is nil. No really, the effort it takes me to walk past a shoe store without going inside is enough to make me feel like I've run 5K. And when I hear of a shoe sale, I self-impose a restraining order so I won't allow myself to come within 100 metres of the place. The fashion police are waiting. And by fashion police, I mean my husband.
I guess it could be worse. I mean, of all the addictions a person could have, shoes are pretty harmless. They're pink, and have bows and pretty little heels. I mean seriously, how dangerous can they really be?
Love shoes, too? Read up on spring's top shoe trends (already starting to file into stores - yay!) to get a lovely jump on the new season. Happy shoe shopping! Sigh...isn't it always?
1. THINK PINK
SPRING SHOE TREND: Pointy-Toe Pastel Flats
DESIGNER INSPIRATION: Narciso Rodriguez, Valentino
WHY WE LOVE THEM:
While we love the ease of a perfect ballet flat, they don't always feel all that sexy. We love these cross-strap beauties with their smart silver snaps - both beautiful and easy to wear all spring and summer long.
OUR PICK: Bone Suede Flats, $70, ALDO
2. LOCKER ROOM
SPRING SHOE TREND: Gym Sandals and Birkenstocks
DESIGNER INSPIRATION: Givenchy, Celine, Marc Jacobs, Marni
WHY WE LOVE THEM: Jolie-laide sandals are everywhere right now, particularly at New York Fashion Week where even the most fashionable editors were gushing over Birkenstocks. Comfy sandals that are right on trend? Y.E.S.
OUR PICK: Leather Velcro Sandals, $90, ALDO (also available in blue - very Suno)
3. WHITE OUT
SPRING SHOE TREND: White Plimsoll Sneakers
DESIGNER INSPIRATION: ICB
WHY WE LOVE THEM: Plimsolls have reached a fever pitch in the shoe world and are loved for their athletic ease for everyday. We particularly love the bright white versions for adding a touch of tennis club chic to any of our summer shorts and dresses.
OUR PICK: Perforated Sneakers, $35, Spring
4. PRINTS CHARMING
SPRING SHOE TREND: Printed Brogues
DESIGNER INSPIRATION: Peter Som
WHY WE LOVE THEM: Borrowed-from-the-boys styling and classic stripes combine in a shoe that we simply can't resist. We'll wear these nautical brogues all spring with all of our cropped pants and dresses.
OUR PICK: Striped Canvas Oxfords, $59.95, Gap
5. HI HO SILVER
SPRING SHOE TREND: Silver Flats
WHY WE LOVE THEM: Like your old ballet flats, but way, way cooler, silver ankle-strap flats help you look like you've made an effort, no matter what you're wearing everywhere else.
DESIGNER INSPIRATION: Pointy Slingback Flat, $28, American Eagle
6. AREN'T YOU GLAD?
SPRING SHOE TREND: Gladiator Sandals
DESIGNER INSPIRATION: Derek Lam
WHY WE LOVE THEM: Each spring, gladiator sandals seem to be on trend which means this is one classic style you should really try out. If you don't feel brave enough to wear tall gladiators, either opt for a less obvious colour like brown or tan, or try a shorter pair on for size.
OUR PICK: Black Gladiator Sandals, $50, Spring
7. TO THE POINT
SPRING SHOE TREND: Florals
DESIGNER INSPIRATION: Rebecca Minkoff, Mulberry, Lanvin Hermes
WHY WE LOVE THEM: For those of us who prefer to keep our prints to a minimum, a pair of floral flats is a perfect way to inject some personality into our outfits. We can't wait to bust these out the minute the snow melts.
OUR PICK: Floral Pointy Flats, $39.95, Gap
8. WILD, WILD WEST
SPRING SHOE TREND: Cowboy Boots
DESIGNER INSPIRATION: Chanel Pre-Fall 2014
WHY WE LOVE THEM: We might be getting ahead of ourselves here, but these starry cowboy boots are like the Chanel Pre-Fall runway come to life. With music festival season around the corner, we think now is the perfect time to pick these beauties up.
9. SHUFFLE ON
SPRING SHOE TREND: Mules and Clogs
DESIGNER INSPIRATION: 3.1 Phillip Lim, Rachel Comey, Tibi
WHY WE LOVE THEM: Mules are one of the most talked-about shoe trends of Spring '14 and while there aren't many mules in stores yet, just wait a few weeks and see. This spring it's all about showing your achilles heel.
OUR PICK: Modern Wedge, $60, Spring
10. NEW HEIGHTS
SPRING SHOE TREND: Wooden Platform Sandals
DESIGNER INSPIRATION: Michael Kors, Jill Stuart
WHY WE LOVE THEM: If Jennifer Aniston could be a shoe, we think she'd be this platform sandal (okay, fine, probably a more expensive version). Friendly, approachable, yet undeniably beautiful, these shoes are like the gorgeous girl-next-door.
OUR PICK: Platform Sandals, $70, ALDO
11. MAJOR LASER
SPRING SHOE TREND: Laser-Cut Heels
DESIGNER INSPIRATION: Christian Louboutin
WHY WE LOVE THEM: Every woman deserves a pair of super sexy shoes and while you might not technically 'need' these laser-cut stunners, they'll pay for themselves every single time you slip them on. Me-ow.
12. FOR THE SPORT
SPRING SHOE TREND: White Heels
DESIGNER INSPIRATION: Alexander Wang, Erdem, Jason Wu
WHY WE LOVE THEM: With all the Sochi talk this year, athletic-inspired clothes were a huge hit with designers for Spring '14. These perforated white shooties are sleek and sporty but most definitely designed for spectator sports.
OUR PICK: Perforated Shooties, $80, ALDO
13. LUCK BE A LADY
SPRING SHOE TREND: Low-Heeled Ladylike Pumps
DESIGNER INSPIRATION: Kate Spade
WHY WE LOVE THEM: Sky-high heels look amazing in pics but in practise? Well, let's just say that if you have to walk anywhere, they can be like mini torture chambers for your toes. Low ladylike heels have made a big comeback for spring, letting us (and our hard-working feet) breathe a sigh of relief.
OUR PICK: Camille D'Orsay Heel, $198, Coach
14. GRAPHIC CONTENT
SPRING SHOE TREND: Graphic Black & White Pumps
DESIGNER INSPIRATION: Sophia Webster for J.Crew
WHY WE LOVE THEM: Whether you're wearing neutrals or bold brights, a graphic black & white shoe will instantly dial up your look.
15. VITAMIN C
SPRING SHOE TREND: Orange
DESIGNER INSPIRATION: Chanel, Prabal Gurung, Givenchy
WHY WE LOVE THEM: Next to purple, orange is top hue for Spring '14. Since orange makes such a huge statement, we think these pumps would just enough juicy pop to our khakis, whites and navy blues.
OUR PICK: Orange Croco-Print Pumps, $50, Spring
16. BRIGHT ON
SPRING SHOE TREND: Primary Bright Sandals
DESIGNER INSPIRATION: Burberry Prorsum
WHY WE LOVE THEM: Life's too short (and our Canadian summers are waaaay too short) to wear boring shoes. If you're guilty of picking black every time, pick up a pair of primary bright sandals this summer - you'll be surprised how very versatile they can be (think patios, docks, lounge chairs, even yachts).
OUR PICK: Lexey Heel, $248, Coach
